Echos after Dark: Four Tales of the Viola Yu Sun x NHKP Baroque Chamber Orchestra
When night falls, the viola reveals its truest voice — warm, shadowed, and deeply human. In this special evening, internationally acclaimed violist Yu Sun joins the NHKP Baroque Chamber Orchestra to explore four musical “tales” that illuminate the instrument’s virtuosity, lyricism, and expressive power.
Former Principal Viola of the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich, Gewandhausorchester Leipzig, and Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, Yu Sun is celebrated for his luminous tone and poetic artistry. His performances span Europe and Asia, earning praise for their emotional depth and refined musicianship.
The programme unfolds as four nocturnal “tales”: Vieuxtemps’ Capriccio “Hommage à Paganini” opens the night with a blaze of virtuosity, a solitary spark cutting through the dark; Schubert’s Arpeggione Sonata (arranged for viola and strings) follows with melodies that flow like moonlight—tender, lyrical, and quietly radiant; Bach’s Violin Sonata No. 1 in G minor (transcribed for viola) offers a moment of profound contemplation, where structure and spirituality meet in stillness; and Telemann’s Viola Concerto in G major brings the evening to a luminous close, its elegance and natural warmth casting the first light before dawn.
A night of stories. A journey through darkness and light. Experience Echos after Dark: Four Tales of the Viola.
